Nikita Kaklamanis
Born on the island of Andros in 1946, Nikita Kaklamanis embarked on a distinguished career spanning medicine, politics, and academia.
Medical Accomplishments
In 1971, Kaklamanis graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Athens. Ten years later, he earned a doctoral degree in medical sciences. From 1983 to 1990, he headed the radiology department of Aretaieio Hospital in Athens while also teaching at the medical faculty of the University of Athens.
Activism and Leadership
Kaklamanis's involvement in medical organizations began as early as 1965, when he was elected to various union bodies as a student. His union career culminated in his re-election in 1987 as the General Secretary of the Panhellenic Medical Association.
Political Career
In 1986, Kaklamanis became a member of the Central Committee of New Democracy (ND), Greece's ruling center-right party. He was subsequently elected to the ND's Executive Committee in 1987.
Kaklamanis's political career took off in 1990 when he became a Member of Parliament for ND. He was re-elected in 2000 and 2004, during which time he also served in the European Parliament. In 2004, he was appointed Minister of Health and Social Solidarity for Greece.
Mayor of Athens
In the 2023 mayoral election, Kaklamanis, running on behalf of ND, was elected as the new mayor of Athens. He secured an impressive 46 percent of the vote, surpassing the 42 percent threshold required to win in the first round.
