Artist of Russian-Italian Heritage
Born to a Russian general and an Italian woman, the artist, graphic designer, and illustrator embarked on a life of art from an early age. He received his education at home before moving to Russia, where he graduated from the law faculty of Saint Petersburg University in 1895.
Military Service and Hospital Work
During World War I, the artist was called to serve in the army. However, he was later transferred from combat units to work in a hospital. This experience profoundly influenced his artistic perspective, fostering a deep compassion for the human condition.
Emigration to France
In 1920, the artist left Russia and settled in France. He became a resident of Paris in 1924, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.
Legacy and Recognition
The artist's paintings have found homes in prestigious institutions such as the Russian Museum (Saint Petersburg), the Museum of Theatrical and Musical Art (Saint Petersburg), the A.A. Bakhrushin Theatre Museum (Moscow), the State Tretyakov Gallery, and the A.S. Pushkin Museum (Moscow). His works are also treasured in private collections around the world, a testament to his enduring impact on the art world.
