Early Life and Family
Nikolaj Lie Kaas was born on May 22, 1973, in Rødovre, Denmark. His parents, actress Anne Marie Lie and actor Preben Kaas, divorced when he was two years old. Kaas lived with his mother and grandmother, carrying the surname Lie, and maintained little contact with his father.
Childhood Trauma and Artistic Beginnings
In the late 1970s, Kaas's mother published an autobiography exposing the alcohol and violence that plagued her marriage to Preben Kaas. Tragically, his father drowned in 1981, presumed to have committed suicide. Eight years later, Kaas's mother also took her own life.
Theatre Career and Breakthrough
Kaas pursued his passion for acting, enrolling at the Danish National Theatre School in 1994. After graduating in 1998, he joined the prestigious Royal Theatre in Copenhagen.
Recognition with Lars von Trier
Kaas's career gained significant momentum after collaborating with renowned director Lars von Trier in the 1998 drama "The Idiots." His performance as Jeppe, a character feigned mental illness, earned him a second "Bodil" award. In 2003, he won another "Bodil" for his role in the melodrama "Open Hearts," becoming the first Danish actor to receive three "Bodil" awards before the age of 30.
International Debut
Kaas made his Hollywood debut in the 2009 thriller "Angels & Demons." He returned to Denmark to star in the highly successful "Department Q" film series, a crime-solving duo featuring Swedish actor Fares Fares.
Recent Projects
Kaas has continued his successful career, collaborating with von Trier once again in the 2022 horror miniseries "The Kingdom Exodus." He also made his debut as a screenwriter and director with the upcoming series "Agent," set to premiere in 2023.
Personal Life
Kaas met stylist Anna Langkilde in 2002 and the couple married four years later. They have two daughters, Gerda and Esther.
