Early Life and Education
Giamatti was born and raised in New Haven, Connecticut. His father, A. Bartlett Giamatti, was a professor at Yale University and later served as the president of the university and chairman of the Major League Baseball. His mother, Toni Smith, was a homemaker and an English teacher at Hopkins School. At one point in her life, she even pursued acting. Giamatti's mother was of Irish descent, while his paternal grandfather was of Italian descent, and his paternal grandmother hailed from New England. He has a brother named Marcus, who is also an actor. Giamatti attended Foothills School and later the elite private school Choate Rosemary Hall. He then studied at Yale University, where he was an active member of the local drama club and had the opportunity to work with Ron Livingston and Edward Norton, who were also students at Yale at the time. He graduated from the university in 1989 with a Bachelor's degree in English.
