Nikolai Zichenko: A Hero of the Soviet Skies
Nikolai Ak্সenovihx Zichenko was a decorated Soviet military aviator who earned the title of Hero of the Soviet Union twice, once for his exploits in the Winter War with Finland and again for his service in World War II.
Early Life and Career
Born in 1918, Zichenko graduated high school and joined the Red Army in 1937. He completed his flight training at the Voroshilovgrad Military Aviation School.
Soviet-Finnish War
During the Soviet-Finnish War, Zichenko served in the 50th High-Speed Bomber Aviation Regiment. In fierce battles on the Karelian Isthmus, he flew 21 combat missions, demonstrating exceptional courage and skill.
Hero of the Soviet Union
On March 21, 1940, Zichenko was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his valor in the Winter War. He received the Order of Lenin and two Orders of the Red Banner.
World War II
Zichenko continued his military service in World War II, joining the fight against Nazi Germany in June 1941. In 1943, he graduated from the Air Force Engineering Academy.
Tragic End
On February 26, 1944, Zichenko was tragically killed in an air battle near Kirovograd, present-day Ukraine. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Patriotic War 1st degree. His memory is honored with a street named after him in Kirovograd.
