Biography of Nikolay Adlerberg

Nikolay Adlerberg, a count, Russian statesman and military leader, was born in 1819. He was the son of Count Vladimir Fedorovich and was raised in the Orthodox faith. He had several siblings, including Alexander, who was a member of the State Council, Anna, who was married to military agent General Lieutenant N.A. Novitsky, Vasily, who was a Major General, and Julia, who was married to A.A. Kovalkov, a member of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Early Military Career

Adlerberg began his military career on December 30, 1830, when he enrolled in the Page Corps. After completing his training, he was appointed as a cornet in the Preobrazhensky Regiment on July 27, 1837. In 1838, he became a wing adjutant to His Majesty, and in 1840, he was promoted to sub-lieutenant. Adlerberg was later assigned to the Separate Caucasian Corps in 1841 and took part in military operations in the Caucasus. He distinguished himself in various battles and was promoted to lieutenant on April 19, 1842.

Service in the Caucasus

Adlerberg continued his service in the Caucasus, participating in recruitment campaigns and leading expeditions to different areas. He demonstrated bravery and was promoted to staff captain on July 1, 1844. In recognition of his actions, Adlerberg was awarded the Order of St. Anna and the Golden Sword for Bravery.

Hungarian Campaign and Later Years

During the Hungarian campaign in 1849, Adlerberg served under General Lieutenant F.V. Ridiger and later under General Lieutenant A.G. Lisetsky. He was promoted to colonel for his bravery and received the Order of St. Anna, 2nd Class, with the Imperial Crown. In 1852, Adlerberg was discharged from military service due to illness and transferred to civil service, where he became a chamberlain at the Court of His Majesty.

During the Crimean War, Adlerberg served as the military governor of Simferopol and the civil governor of Tavricheskaya Province from November 4, 1854, to May 15, 1856. He was promoted to major general and became a member of His Majesty's entourage. Adlerberg participated in battles against the Anglo-French forces and was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir, 3rd Class, and the Order of St. Stanislaus, 1st Class.

In 1866, Adlerberg became the general governor of the Grand Duchy of Finland and the commander of the Finnish Military District. He held this position for sixteen years until 1881 when he was appointed as a member of the State Council. Adlerberg received numerous awards throughout his career, including the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky, the Order of St. Vladimir, 1st Class, and the Order of the White Eagle.

Apart from his military achievements, Adlerberg was known for his intellectual pursuits. He embarked on two journeys to Palestine and published his travel experiences in books titled "From Rome to Jerusalem" (1853) and "En Orient, impressions et réminiscences" (1867). Adlerberg passed away on December 13, 1892, in Munich.
