Biography of Nikolay Amosov

Nikolay Amosov was a Soviet and Ukrainian thoracic surgeon, medical scientist, and writer. Born on December 6, 1913, in a small village near Cherepovets, his family had a peasant background. His mother worked as a midwife, and his father left the family soon after returning from World War I. Nikolay grew up in poverty, but his mother's dedication to her work and his grandmother's influence shaped his values and aspirations.

At the age of 12, Amosov moved to Cherepovets to continue his education. He studied in a school and later in a technical college, where he earned a degree in engineering. Despite his interest in physiology, he ended up pursuing a career in medicine and enrolled in the Arkhangelsk Medical Institute in 1935. During his studies, he developed a passion for surgery and began working as a surgeon in a hospital in his hometown.

He also became a professor at the Kyiv Medical Institute and worked as a surgeon in the Republican Hospital. His research and surgical innovations, including heart surgeries, gained international recognition, and he was invited to present his work at conferences and congresses around the world.
