Early Life and Career

Nikolai Paniulinwas born in the Soviet Union and became a renowned cross-country skier. He joined the "Dynamo" sports club and was coached by Vasily Alekseevich Porfiryev. In 1954, he graduated from the Central State Institute of Physical Culture (GCOLIFK) as a coach and teacher.

Olympic Success

Paniulin achieved his greatest success at the 1956 Winter Olympics. He became an Olympic champion in the 4x10 km relay event. He also won a bronze medal in the 30 km individual race and the 4x10 km relay at the 1960 Winter Olympics.

National and International Achievements

In addition to his Olympic feats, Paniulin won the 1957 Soviet National Championship in the 4x10 km relay. He also earned a silver medal in the 4x10 km relay at the 1958 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.

Coaching Career

Paniulin retired from competitive skiing and pursued a coaching career. He became the head coach of the Soviet national team from 1982 to 1984. Later, from 1989 to 1992, he served as a coaching consultant for the United States national team.

Critic of the Russian Ski Federation

Paniulin was known for his outspoken criticism of the leadership of the Russian Ski Federation (FLGR). He publicly voiced his concerns at the FLGR Coaching Council meeting in April 2006.

Legacy

Paniulin was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor in 1957 for his contributions to Soviet sport. He retired from active coaching and remained a respected voice in the world of cross-country skiing until his passing.
