Nikolai Fyodorovich Balboskin

Nikolai Fyodorovich Balboskin was a Soviet wrestler (Greco-Roman style). He was born on June 8, 1949, in Potsdam, Germany, to a military family. Despite not having robust health as a child, Nikolai never let his medical condition hold him back from pursuing his passion for sports. He always attended physical education classes and engaged in activities with his older brother, Vladimir, who was already involved in classical wrestling.

At the age of 13, Nikolai joined his brother in the wrestling section. Although he initially struggled to meet the admission requirements, he eventually gained acceptance and began training with his brother. They practiced at home, challenging each other and building their strength and willpower. This period played a crucial role in shaping Nikolai's determined character.

Nikolai quickly surpassed his older brother in wrestling. He achieved significant victories, but also experienced several injuries throughout his career. However, these setbacks did not deter him from pursuing his goals. Under the guidance of his coach Anatoly Parfenov, Nikolai continued to train intensely and improve his technique. He gained mastery in the throw known as "bridge throw" and became known for defeating his opponents decisively.

In 1972, Nikolai Balboskin suffered a knee injury, which forced him to withdraw from the Olympic Games. However, he made a remarkable comeback in 1973 by winning the European Championship and the World Championship in the following year. He continued to achieve success, winning numerous championships and becoming an Olympic champion in 1976.

Despite facing another serious injury during the 1980 Olympics, Nikolai Balboskin remained dedicated to the sport. After retiring from professional wrestling, he became a coach and worked with the Moscow Wrestling Federation. He shared his experience and expertise with young athletes. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR and received the Orders of the Red Banner of Labor and the Badge of Honor.

Currently, Nikolai Balboskin resides in Moscow and continues to contribute to the wrestling community. In his free time, he enjoys reading, working in his garden, and spending time with his family.
