Biographical Sketch of Nikolai Aleksandrovich Denisov

Early Life and Education

Nikolai Aleksandrovich Denisov was born into a bourgeois family in the Kostroma Governorate of Russia. He graduated from the Vladimir Military School in St. Petersburg and completed an accelerated course at the General Staff Academy.

Military Career

World War I

Denisov fought in the 325th Tsarskoye Infantry Regiment during World War I, attaining the rank of lieutenant.

Civil War

During the Russian Civil War, Denisov joined the White Army in Siberia. In November 1919, he became the chief of staff of the Separate Semirechensk Army. He was promoted to major general in 1919 or 1920.

Emigration and Captivity

After the defeat of the White Army, Denisov emigrated to China. In February 1920, he led a detachment that refused to surrender to the Red Army. He escaped to China in the spring of 1920. Denisov successfully negotiated the release of General Boris V. Annenkov, who had been imprisoned in Urumqi by Chinese authorities.

In a tragic turn of events, Denisov and Annenkov were captured by Bolsheviks in China through deception. They were handed over to the Cheka in exchange for a large monetary reward.

Execution

On August 24, 1927, Denisov and Annenkov were executed in Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan.

Posthumous Recognition

In 1999, the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of Russia denied the rehabilitation of Denisov and Annenkov.

Awards

Denisov was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th Class, in 1916. He also received other orders of the Russian Empire.
