Nikolay Dolzhansky: A Hero of the Soviet Union

Nikolay Ivanovich Dolzhansky was born on September 27, 1917, in the city of Kurgan, in a family of civil servants. He worked as a draftsman in Alma-Ata and simultaneously attended an aeroclub. In 1940, Dolzhansky joined the Soviet Army and in 1942, he graduated from the Chkalov Military Aviation School of Pilots.

A Heroic Pilot

In July 1943, Dolzhansky was deployed to the front as a senior pilot in the 165th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment of the 10th Guards Assault Aviation Division, part of the 2nd Air Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front. By August 1944, he had completed 113 combat sorties, successfully destroying enemy troops and equipment.

Awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union

In recognition of his bravery and exceptional service, Dolzhansky was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on October 26, 1944. He continued to serve in the Soviet Army until 1957 when he retired as a colonel.

Post-Military Career and Contributions

After his military service, Dolzhansky worked in road organizations and from 1968 to 1980, he served as the chief of the Brest Road Maintenance Unit. From 1980 to 1990, he worked as a technician at the Brest Electromechanical Plant. Dolzhansky also actively participated in the public life of the Brest region and the city of Brest, particularly in military-patriotic education for youth.

Recognitions and Honors

Dolzhansky was decorated with numerous awards, including the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, Orders of Alexander Nevsky, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class, the Order of the Red Star, and the Order of the Republic of Belarus "For Service to the Motherland" 3rd Class (1999). He also received numerous medals and certificates from the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR and the regional Council of Deputies. Dolzhansky currently resides in Brest.
