A Life of Resilience and Enterprise

Early Challenges

Nikolai Sergiyevich Fateyev was born in April 1945, a time of great triumph in the wake of World War II. However, his early life was marked by adversity, as he grew up in a small and cramped room with his family. Perhaps it was this humble beginning that sowed the seeds of an "unusual" condition that would later manifest.

A Diagnosis and a New Calling

As a child, Nikolai led a typical life, filled with play and mischief. However, his true difference became apparent during a medical examination at his school. Doctors diagnosed him with the severe muscular disease pseudomyopathic spinal amyotrophy (Kugelberg-Welander disease).

With a disability classification of third grade, Nikolai pursued a seemingly safe career as an accountant. Unfortunately, this occupation proved short-lived. While walking to work one day, he tripped and injured his foot, effectively ending his days as a mobile employee.

A Gift Unveiled

Faced with this setback, Nikolai embarked on a new path. He discovered his artistic talent and began painting wooden toys.

"You cannot imagine the joy I felt knowing that the toys I created might bring happiness to some child," Nikolai recalled. "I loved it so much that I thought I could do it for a lifetime."

The Winds of Change

However, life had other plans. The post-Soviet era brought economic instability and the closure of the workshop that had provided Nikolai with employment.

"My disease was also progressing," he said. "I traded my cane for crutches and then for a wheelchair as my legs gave out."

Despite these challenges, Nikolai's unwavering optimism prevailed.

An Unbreakable Spirit

Fortune smiled upon Nikolai when he met the love of his life, Irina Arkadyevna. They first crossed paths at a community event for individuals with disabilities. Irina, a modest and charming woman from Transcarpathia, and Nikolai, a cheerful Muscovite, immediately felt a connection. Their bond blossomed over walks in Vorontsov Gardens and culminated in a quiet family celebration of their marriage in 1998.

"I cannot imagine my life without Ira," Nikolai said. "Everything we do together feels right."

The Birth of an Entrepreneur

With newfound stability, Nikolai and Irina decided to venture into business. Nikolai's accounting skills complemented Irina's able-bodiedness. In July 1998, Nikolai became a registered entrepreneur.

However, their journey was far from smooth. The bureaucracy showed no mercy to a disabled entrepreneur, demanding countless documents and permits.

"I had to collect unimaginable amounts of paperwork and sign a contract with a dairy plant that was not interested in supplying small batches," Nikolai recalled.

Perseverance in the Face of Adversity

Despite these obstacles, the couple persevered. They secured a small stall at the Cheryomushkinsky Market to sell dairy products.

"It was physically demanding to get there and back in a wheelchair, especially in bad weather," Nikolai said. "We would often have to take leftover goods home with us."

A Lifeline on Wheels

Nikolai's life improved dramatically with the acquisition of a motorized wheelchair. Irina drove him everywhere, and together they managed their business.

"The car made everything easier," Nikolai said. "Irina at the wheel, me by her side, me at the counter, Irina beside me."

A Temporary Setback

However, fate dealt another blow. A cheaper market opened near the University metro station, and the Fateevs lost their customers. They were forced to give up their hard-earned stall in May 2000.

Reinvention and Resilience

Once again, the couple refused to be discouraged. Irina suggested buying a mobile stall on wheels. They quickly renovated it and established partnerships with local farms.

"We tried to please our customers with both price and variety," Nikolai said. "Most people were kind to us, but we occasionally faced harsh words."

A Precarious Existence

The Fateevs' income fluctuated, but they managed to make ends meet. They even dreamed of visiting Irina's homeland to meet her son from a previous marriage.

However, fate had one more twist in store.

An Unjust Eviction

In 2003, the Fateevs received a notice ordering them to relocate their stall to a new location for increased parking. This meant restarting the entire permitting process, an expensive and time-consuming task.

"We tried everything we could to stay at our current location, but it was useless," Nikolai said.

In June 2003, the stall was closed.

A Second Chance

On the cusp of the new year in 2004, the Fateevs were unexpectedly granted permission to return to their old spot.

After much deliberation, they decided to take the risk once more.

"I would never beg in the streets," Nikolai said. "I would rather starve than do that."

An Unwavering Determination

Today, Nikolai and Irina continue to run their business with the same resilience and determination that has characterized their entire lives. They have faced countless challenges, but their love for each other and their unwavering belief in their abilities have guided them through every obstacle.
