Nikolai Stepanovich Gorbachev was a prominent military engineer and a Major General of the Soviet Army. He was born on May 20, 1892, in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Military Service

Gorbachev began his military service in 1918. During the Great Patriotic War, he served as a military engineer in the 4th Ukrainian Front and the 26th Separate Engineering Work Brigade of the Red Army General Headquarters.

Engineering Exploits

Gorbachev's engineering expertise played a crucial role in the Soviet Union's defense on the southern front. He oversaw the construction of defensive fortifications along the Vasylivka-Melitopol-Molochne Lake line in the summer of 1943.

As the Soviet army advanced, Gorbachev's team erected field defensive lines along the Dnieper River under enemy fire. His exceptional professionalism and organizational abilities minimized casualties during these construction efforts.

Carpathian Operation

In the autumn of 1944, Gorbachev's brigade participated in the engineering preparations for the Carpathian Operation. Under his direction, they restored damaged road sections and constructed bridges for the advancing Soviet troops.

Legacy

Nikolai Stepanovich Gorbachev passed away and was buried at the Nikolo-Arkhangelskoye Cemetery in Moscow.
