In 2000, he made the significant move to Lviv's "Karpaty," initially playing for their reserve teams, "Karpaty-2" and "Karpaty-3." However, it was during the 2005/06 season that his star truly began to shine. As part of the "Karpaty" squad, he earned a silver medal in the Ukrainian First League, securing the team's promotion to the Premier League. Ishchenko made his Premier League debut on July 23, 2006, in a home match against Zaporizhzhia's "Metallurg" (0:0).

During his tenure with the team, he experienced tremendous success, including a triumph in the UEFA Cup in the 2008/09 season, where "Shakhtar" emerged victorious against Werder Bremen. Additionally, "Shakhtar" reached the final of the Ukrainian Cup, eventually losing to Poltava's "Vorskla." Ishchenko's contribution to the team's impressive 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons, where they claimed the Ukrainian Premier League titles, was noteworthy.
