Manfred Kaltz: German Football Legend
Early Life and CareerManfred Kaltz, a German footballer, was born on January 6, 1953. He began his football journey at the Neuhausen football school, where he progressed through numerous youth teams. His coach's departure to Hamburger SV's football academy prompted Kaltz to join him there.
Hamburg SV Era (1971-1989)
In 1971, after spending a year at the academy, Kaltz was named to the main squad of Hamburger SV. His Bundesliga debut came on August 21, 1971, in a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund. Throughout his 18 seasons with Hamburg, Kaltz played consistently, making 581 appearances and scoring 76 goals, many of which were penalties. His contributions helped Hamburg achieve unprecedented success, winning three Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokals, and the European Cup Winners' Cup.
International Career
Kaltz made his international debut for Germany in 1975 in a friendly match against Austria. He played a pivotal role in Germany's major tournament successes, including a European Championship title, a European Championship runner-up finish, and a World Cup runner-up finish. In total, he earned 69 caps and scored nine goals for the national team.
Later Career and Retirement
In 1989, Hamburg's management did not renew Kaltz's contract due to his age. He moved to Bordeaux and then to Mulhouse. However, in 1991, Hamburg's new management offered him a return, which he accepted. After one season, he retired from playing.
