Biography of Hermann Vogelsang
Hermann Vogelsang (1838-1874) was a German mineralogist and petrologist. He was born on April 11, 1838, in Minden, Germany. Vogelsang received his higher education in Bonn, where he began lecturing in 1864. However, he was soon invited to join the polytechnic institute in Delft, where he remained until his death.
As one of the pioneers in the field, Vogelsang started studying minerals and rocks under a microscope. He was also one of the first to explore molten inclusions in minerals and laid the foundations of thermo-baro geochemistry. Together with Geisler, Vogelsang determined the composition of the mysterious liquid found in Brewster's inclusions, which turned out to be liquid carbon dioxide (Vogelsang and Geisler, 1869).
Vogelsang's book "Philosophie der Geologie nebst mikroskopischen Gesteinsstudien" (Bonn, 1867) contains beautiful color illustrations of rocks under a microscope. This book has become a rarity and is highly valued by collectors.
