Nikolai Kropachev: A Leading Figure in Russian Law and Education
Early Life and EducationNikolai Nikolaevich Kropachev was born on February 8, 1959, in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). In 1981, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Law at Leningrad State University (now Saint Petersburg State University), where his dissertation was titled "Criminal Legal Relations."
Academic Career
Following his graduation, Kropachev joined the Faculty of Law at Saint Petersburg State University as an assistant in 1985. He later became a senior lecturer and then an associate professor. In 1992-93, he served as Dean of the Special Faculty for Retraining in Legal Sciences. From 1993-98, he was First Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law.
In 1998, Kropachev was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Law and in 2000, he became Head of the Department of Criminal Law. He also attained the rank of professor in 2001.
Judicial Appointments
In 2004, Kropachev was elected to the Presidium of the Council of Judges of the Russian Federation. From 2000 to 2005, he served as Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Saint Petersburg.
Role in the Constitutional Court of Saint Petersburg
During his tenure as Chairman, the Constitutional Court under Kropachev's leadership made several notable rulings. In 2004, it nearly overturned a privatization program proposed by the city government, and later declared the position of the head of the gubernatorial administration to be illegitimate. However, these rulings were not enforced due to opposition from the city authorities.
Leadership in Legal Organizations
Kropachev has played an active role in various legal organizations. He is the President of the Association of Lawyers of Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Region, Vice-President of the Interregional Association of Law Schools of Russia, and a member of the Council of the President of the Russian Federation on the Improvement of Justice.
Academic Recognition and Awards
Kropachev is a recipient of the President of the Russian Federation's Prize in the field of Education and the Order of Honor. He also holds the rank of Active State Counselor of Saint Petersburg, First Class.
Current Role as Acting Rector of Saint Petersburg State University
On February 18, 2008, Kropachev was appointed Acting Rector of Saint Petersburg State University. He has brought a wealth of experience in academia, law, and public service to this role.
