Soviet Party Figure
Early Life and EducationNikolai Nikolaevich Kruchina was born on June 2, 1928, in Rostov-on-Don. He joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1949 and graduated from the Azov-Black Sea Agricultural Institute in 1953.
Komsomol Career and Hungary Intervention
From 1952 to 1959, Kruchina worked for the Komsomol, the Soviet youth organization, in the Donets Basin and Belarus. In 1956, he was deployed as a party agitator during the Hungarian Revolution, earning the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1957).
Party Leadership Roles
In 1959, Kruchina became head of the rural youth department of the Central Committee of the Komsomol. On the day of the Novocherkassk Massacre (June 2, 1962), he was the First Secretary of the Novocherkassk City Committee of the Komsomol.
From 1962 to 1965, Kruchina served as a secretary of the Tselinny Krai Committee of the CPSU in Kazakhstan. In 1965, he became First Secretary of the Tselinograd Oblast Committee of the CPSU.
Rise to Prominence
In 1978, Kruchina was appointed First Deputy Head of the Agricultural Department of the Central Committee of the CPSU under Viktor Karlov. In 1983, he became Manager of Affairs of the Central Committee under Mikhail Gorbachev. This position gave him control over the party's financial activities, including investments in Western banks.
The August Coup and Aftermath
After the failed August Coup in 1991, Kruchina was involved in closing down the Central Committee buildings. On August 26, he fell from the balcony of his apartment and died.
Controversial Death
Kruchina left two suicide notes, stating that he feared for his safety but denying any involvement in the coup. However, some individuals, including former Soviet officials, have questioned the circumstances of his death and suggested foul play.
Legacy
Nikolai Kruchina was a prominent figure in the Soviet Communist Party, known for his diplomatic skills and close relationship with Mikhail Gorbachev. His death in the aftermath of the August Coup remains shrouded in mystery.
