Nikolai Grigorievich Malomuz, a prominent Ukrainian statesman, served as the Chairman of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine and held the rank of Colonel General.

Education and Early Career

Malomuz was born in the Zvenigorodsky district of the Cherkasy region into a rural family. After serving in a special forces brigade of the GRU in the Soviet Army, he pursued a legal degree from the prestigious Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, graduating with honors in 1982.

From Soldier to Spy

Despite his academic prowess and potential for a scientific career, Malomuz's destiny took a different turn. His legal education, fluency in foreign languages, military experience, and exceptional communication skills proved invaluable when he received an offer to join the external intelligence service in the mid-eighties.

Throughout the 1990s, Malomuz focused on combating international terrorist organizations. He successfully executed several covert operations, including a significant intelligence maneuver that thwarted an Islamist group's attempt to establish a base in Ukraine for operations targeting the European Union.

The Kuchma Era and Beyond

With the appointment of Igor Smeshko, a loyalist of the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (united), as head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the organization underwent a shift towards suppressing the opposition. Malomuz found himself under suspicion due to his affiliation with the "Ostrov" (the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine), but the SBU leadership hesitated to dismiss him due to his control over important intelligence sources.

Political Fallout and Rehabilitation

In the wake of Viktor Yushchenko's victory in the 2004 presidential election, Malomuz became an advisor to the President. His promotion to the Foreign Intelligence Service in 2005 was viewed as a logical step, given his lack of political ties and his proposal for reforming the SVR.
