Early Life and Education
Nikolai Nikolaevich Petin was born on May 2, 1876, in Vologda, Russia, into a noble family. He received his education at the Nizhny Novgorod Cadet Corps (1894), the Nikolaev Engineering School (1897), and the Nikolaev Military Academy (1907).
Military Career
Pre-Revolutionary ServicePetin participated in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05) and the First World War. During the latter conflict, he held various staff positions, including Assistant Chief of Staff of the Northwestern Front, Senior Adjutant of the Quartermaster General Department of the 12th Army, and Chief of Staff of the Quartermaster General Department of the Northwestern Front. By the end of the war, he had risen to the rank of Colonel.
Service in the Red Army
After the October Revolution, Petin joined the Soviet Army in February 1918. During the Russian Civil War, he served as Chief of the Mobilization Department of the Belomorsky Military District and later Chief of Staff of the 6th Army. His contributions to the planning of the Shenkursk Operation (1919) played a crucial role in liberating northern Russia from foreign intervention and White Guard forces. Subsequently, Petin commanded the staffs of the Western (May 1919), Southern (November 1919), and Southwestern Fronts (January 1920).
Post-Civil War Activities
Following the Civil War, Petin served as Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Siberia and commanded the troops of the Kiev, Siberian, and Western Siberian Military Districts. He also held positions as Chief of the Main Directorate of the Red Army (1924-25) and Commander of the Siberian Military District.
Later Career and Commendations
From November 1928 to April 1930, Petin was a special advisor to the Revolutionary Military Council of the USSR and Deputy Chief of the Main Directorate of the Red Army. Subsequently, he served as Inspector of Fortified Regions (April 1930), Chief of Engineers (January 1932), and Chief of the Engineering Department (December 1934) of the Red Army. From November 1934 onwards, he was a member of the Military Council of the People's Commissariat of Defense of the USSR. Petin was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner for his contributions to the Soviet military.
