Biography of Nikolay Shmatko
Nikolay Gavrilovich Shmatko, also known as the King of Marble, is a renowned Ukrainian sculptor and professor. He was born and currently creates his works in Ukraine. Shmatko has two sons who actively participate in the execution of various projects under his guidance.
Creative Achievements
Throughout his artistic career, Nikolay Shmatko has created over 750 monuments, reliefs, and sculptures, as well as around 500 paintings. What sets him apart is that he accomplished these feats without any government support or patronage.
His unique collection, exhibited at his gallery "Shmatko and Sons," is unparalleled in the world. It includes 70 sculptures made from Ural and Italian marble, along with approximately 300 paintings in various mediums, including oil paintings and graphic art.
Recognition and Teaching
In the year 2000, Shmatko was appointed as a professor at the Department of Art and Fine Arts at the Moscow Institute of "World Civilizations." This prestigious position recognized his extensive knowledge and expertise in artistic creation.
The Creation of "The Sviatohirsk Mother of God"
In 2004, after prolonged negotiations with the administration of the Donetsk region and the abbot of the "Sviatohirsk" Lavra, it was decided to entrust Nikolay Gavrilovich Shmatko with the creation and realization of the marble sculpture "The Sviatohirsk Mother of God." Following restoration works, the Lavra was officially opened in the fall, showcasing the installed sculpture of the Virgin Mary, standing at a height of 4 meters and 20 centimeters. This magnificent sculpture was carved from two blocks of Ural marble, weighing 40 tons.
As a result of his contribution to the development of the Orthodox Church and the creation of "The Sviatohirsk Mother of God," Nikolay Shmatko was honored with the "Nestor the Chronicler" Order of the 3rd degree by Metropolitan Vladimir, the Patriarch of All Ukraine.
The "Assumption" Church and "The Crucifixion of Christ" Sculpture
In the autumn of 2005, the completed "Assumption" church in the village of Keleberda, Poltava region, was inaugurated. A significant highlight of this church is the sculpture "The Crucifixion of Christ" crafted by Nikolay Shmatko.
