Biographical Profile of Nikolai Dmitrievich Yushchuk
Early Life and EducationNikolai Dmitrievich Yushchuk was born on December 22, 1940, in the village of Ovody, Brest Region, Belarus. He obtained his medical degree from the Irkutsk State Medical Institute in 1966. Subsequently, he completed his residency in Infectious Diseases at the same institution.
Medical Career
Dr. Yushchuk served as Chief Medical Officer of the Irkutsk City Infectious Diseases Hospital from 1968 to 1969. In the 1970s, he worked at the Central Scientific Research Institute of Epidemiology as a researcher and junior research fellow.
Since 1971, Dr. Yushchuk has been affiliated with the Moscow State Dental Institute (now the Moscow State Medical and Dental University). He has held various positions, including Assistant, Associate Professor, Professor, and Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases. From 1982 to 1986, he served as Dean of the Preparatory Department. For over 15 years, he held the position of Vice-Rector (1986-2002). In 2002, Dr. Yushchuk was appointed Rector of the Moscow State Medical and Dental University.
Scientific Research
Dr. Yushchuk's research focuses on the pathogenesis and treatment of common infectious diseases. His work utilizes functional-morphological, immunological, and molecular approaches. He has collaborated with specialists in other medical disciplines to study the impact of infectious diseases on specific organs.
Dr. Yushchuk's research interests include the use of molecular biology techniques in diagnosing viral hepatitis, predicting outcomes, and evaluating treatment effectiveness. He has also investigated the role of pathogenicity therapy in diphtheria, intestinal infections, and hepatitis in socially marginalized populations.
Academic and Professional Affiliations
Dr. Yushchuk is an academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (1999) and Deputy Academic Secretary of the Academy. He is a member of the Presidium of the International Society for Infectious Diseases and Microbiologists (Boston, USA, 1998). Dr. Yushchuk serves on the Expert Council of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation for Therapeutic Disciplines. He is also a member of specialized councils for defending doctoral and candidate dissertations at the Moscow Medical University and the Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education.
Honors and Awards
Dr. Yushchuk has received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to medicine. He is a Merited Scientist of the Russian Federation and a laureate of the Russian Government Prize. He has been awarded the Orders of "Badge of Honor" and "For Merit to the Fatherland," IV degree, as well as various medals and distinctions.
Publications and Mentoring
Dr. Yushchuk has authored over 600 scientific works, including monographs, textbooks, reference books, journal articles, and conference proceedings. He has supervised 11 doctoral and 52 candidate dissertations.
Personal Life
Dr. Yushchuk is married to Valentina Vasilyevna Raevskaya. They have a daughter, Elena Nikolaevna Yushchuk, born in 1973. He enjoys gardening as a hobby.
Current Position
Dr. Nikolai Dmitrievich Yushchuk currently resides and works in Moscow as the Rector of the Moscow State Medical and Dental University.
