Early Life and Education
Irina Tokmakova was born on October 3, 1930, in the Soviet Union. She pursued her higher education at Moscow State University, where she graduated in 1953 with a degree in English language and literature.
Academic Career
After completing her undergraduate studies, Tokmakova embarked on a career in academia. She taught English language, contemporary English and American literature, and children's literature at various universities. Notably, she pioneered the teaching of children's literature as a philological discipline in university curricula.
Doctoral Thesis and Specialization
In 1986, Tokmakova defended her doctoral dissertation on "English Children's Literature from 1740 to 1870." This research established her as a leading specialist in the field, particularly in the works of Lewis Carroll.
Literary Translations
Tokmakova made significant contributions to the translation of English literature into Russian. Her canonical translations of Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass" are widely acclaimed for their precision and faithfulness to the original text. Additionally, she translated works by renowned authors such as Chesterton, Poe, Dickens, J. Macdonald, Burnett, J. M. Barrie, B. Potter, A. Garner, R. K. Narayan, and Updike.
Honors and Affiliations
Tokmakova's expertise in English literature was recognized by honorary memberships in both the Lewis Carroll Society in England and the U.S., as well as the Beatrix Potter Society in England.
