Early Life and Education
Nikolina Konstantinova Dobreva was born on January 9, 1989, in Sofia, Bulgaria, to programmer Konstantin Dobrev and artist Mihaela Dobreva. She has an older brother named Alexander. In 1991, her family immigrated to Toronto, Canada, where Dobrev spent her childhood and adolescence.

From an early age, Dobrev showed a keen interest in the arts, particularly dance. She studied ballet and rhythmic gymnastics at J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School. Along with dance and gymnastics, she also pursued music, visual arts, drama, and acting. As a high school student at Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts, the tall and slender Dobrev tried modeling but realized it was not her true passion. She ultimately discovered her calling in acting.

Career Beginnings
In 2006, Dobrev made her acting debut with minor roles in several Canadian television films and feature films, including "Family Game Night," "Too Young to Marry," "The Double," "Away from Her," and "Fugitive Pieces." However, it was her role in the youth drama series "Degrassi: The Next Generation" that brought her wider recognition.

Rise to Fame with "The Vampire Diaries"
In 2009, Dobrev's career took a dramatic turn when she was cast as the lead role of Elena Gilbert in The CW's supernatural drama "The Vampire Diaries." The show, based on the book series of the same name, became a global phenomenon. Dobrev's portrayal of Елена, a high school girl torn between two ancient vampires, earned her critical acclaim and widespread popularity. She won Teen Choice Awards in 2010 for "Breakthrough Female Actress" and "Best Actress in a Fantasy/Sci-Fi Show."

Post-"Vampire Diaries" Career
After departing from "The Vampire Diaries" in 2015, Dobrev has pursued a diverse range of projects. She has starred in films such as "Chloe" (2009), "The Roommate" (2011), "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" (2012), and "xXx: Return of Xander Cage" (2017). Dobrev has also appeared in television shows including "The Originals," "Fam," and the upcoming "Woman 99."
Personal Life
Dobrev's high-profile relationship with "Vampire Diaries" co-star Ian Somerhalder sparked significant media interest. The couple dated from 2010 to 2013. In 2015, Somerhalder married actress Nikki Reed. Dobrev has maintained a private dating life since their split.
