Nina Katerli: A Life Dedicated to Literature and Human Rights
Early Life and EducationNina Katerli (née Farfel) was born in Leningrad on June 30, 1934, to a family of journalists. Her mother, Elena Iosifovna Katerli, later became a renowned prose writer. Her father, Semyon Farfel, was a member of the Writers' Union.
Nina Katerli graduated from the Leningrad Technological Institute in 1958 with a degree in chemical engineering. She worked as an engineer for 15 years before beginning her literary career in the late 1960s.
Literary Journey
Katerli's first published work, the short story "Dobro pozhalovat," appeared in the magazine "Koster" in 1973. Her debut novel, "Okno," was published in 1981. She went on to publish numerous short story collections, including "Tsvetnye otkrytki" (1986), "Kurzal" (1990), and "Sennaya ploshchad" (1992).
In 1998, Katerli published the documentary novel "Isk," which explored the topic of anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union. Her novel "Tot svet" was serialized in the magazine "Zvezda" in 1999.
Human Rights Activism
Nina Katerli has been an outspoken advocate for human rights throughout her career. She has written and published numerous articles exposing neo-Nazi activity in Russia and addressing the plight of the elderly.
In 1988, Katerli's anti-fascist article "Doroga k pamyatnikam" led to a two-year lawsuit filed against her by A. Romanenko, the author of an "anti-Zionist" book. The lawsuit was ultimately dismissed.
Literary Affiliations
Katerli is a member of the St. Petersburg Writers' Union, the St. Petersburg PEN Club, and the editorial boards of several literary journals and newspapers.
Family and Personal Life
Nina Katerli married Mikhail Efros, a scientist who later became the director of the Institute of Abrasives and Grinding. They have two children: Elena, a journalist, and Alexander, an entrepreneur.
