Biography of Nina Tamarova
Nina Vasilyevna Tamarova was a renowned actress and People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR. She made a significant contribution to the theatrical scene, particularly at the A.S. Pushkin Russian Drama Theater in Kharkiv.
The Impact of "Trees Die Standing"
In the 1950s, the play "Trees Die Standing" by Alejandro Casona took the theater world by storm. Despite not being a groundbreaking piece of literature or tackling significant social issues, the productions of this play achieved tremendous success. Those who chose to stage this play were guaranteed a full house. During that era, performances that evoked simple human emotions, untainted by ideology, were a rarity. Censorship was vigilant in safeguarding the achievements of the October Revolution and sieving anything resembling abstract humanism. Good-hearted emotions, selfless love, and compassion were highly valued. By some miracle, Alejandro Casona's play managed to break through the ironclad censorship and triumphantly graced our stages.
The Power of Nina Tamarova's Silence
Of the three productions of "Trees Die Standing" that I witnessed, the one that left the greatest impression and emotional impact on me was the one featuring Nina Tamarova in the lead role. She was an exceptional actress, the wife and collaborator of Akimov, who portrayed the protagonist with unparalleled skill and intensity. Whether it was in Leningrad, where I saw her with Elena Vladimirovna, or in Kyiv with Evgeniya Emmanuilovna Opalova, or in Lviv during the tour of the Kharkiv Russian Drama Theater named after Pushkin, it was Nina Vasilyevna Tamarova who captured my attention.
What fascinated me about her performance was her ability to convey a powerful dramatic dialogue through her silence. How she loved in silence! How she anticipated miracles! How courageously she portrayed the drama in her silent moments. There were other talented actors on stage who played their roles with energy and infectious enthusiasm, moving the plot forward. But the audience's eyes were fixated on Nina Tamarova, drawn to her grand and inspired silence.
