Norbert Darabos: A Political Career in Austria

Norbert Darabos was born on May 31, 1964 in Austria. His educational journey began with gymnasium in Vienna, followed by his enrollment in University, where he pursued studies in History and Political Science.

Early Political Involvement

Darabos embarked on his political career in 1987 as a Secret Advisor. In 1998, he rose to become the Responsible Secretary for the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) in Burgenland. His influence grew further in 2003, when he became the Responsible Secretary for the party at the federal level. Concurrently, he held the position of Member of the National Council from 2004 to 2007.

Ministerial Appointments and the Bugging Scandal

In 2007, Darabos was appointed as Minister of Defense and Sports for Austria. However, his tenure was marked by a controversial scandal in March 2009. A listening device was discovered in the office of his press secretary, Anwar Lang, in May 2008. This revelation was widely interpreted as a consequence of Darabos' conflicts with the Austrian military, who resented his lack of military service, as well as political disagreements, given the military's traditional support for the ÖVP (Austrian People's Party).

Personal Life

Norbert Darabos is a married man with two children.
