Jane Roe: A Life in the Spotlight
Norma Leah Nelson, known to the world by her pseudonym Jane Roe, was born on September 22, 1947, in Simmesport, Louisiana. Growing up in Texas, she married Woody McCorvey, but their union was short-lived. Norma, now known as Norma McCorvey, soon realized her true sexual orientation and began a relationship with Connie Gonzales.
Roe v. Wade: A Landmark Case
In 1970, Norma's story took a dramatic turn. Attorneys Linda Coffee and Sarah Weddington filed a lawsuit in a Texas court on behalf of "Jane Roe," seeking to legalize abortion in cases of rape or incest. The lawsuit, opposed by Texas's district attorney Henry Wade, became known as Roe v. Wade. The case eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Jane Roe on January 22, 1973, legalizing abortion nationwide.
Post-Ruling Activism and Retreat
Norma McCorvey initially became an advocate for abortion rights. However, over time, she distanced herself from the movement and disappeared from public view.
The Unexpected Transformation
In 1995, Norma McCorvey resurfaced as an anti-abortion activist. She testified before Congress in 1998, expressing regret for her role in Roe v. Wade. She attempted to have the decision overturned in the Supreme Court but was denied.
Faith and Family
Norma McCorvey ultimately found solace in Christianity. She raised two children and has remained a devout believer to this day.
