Pamela Geller: American Anti-Muslim Activist and Blogger
Pamela Geller is an American anti-Muslim political activist, blogger, and commentator. She is known for promoting birther conspiracy theories about former President Barack Obama, claiming that he was born in Kenya and is a Muslim. Geller also denies the genocides of Muslims, such as the Bosnian Genocide and the Rohingya Genocide.
Background and Early Life
Pamela Geller was born into a Jewish family in Hewlett Harbor, New York. She is the third of four sisters and the daughter of Ruben Geller, a textile manufacturer, and Lillian Geller. Geller attended Lynbrook Senior High School and Hofstra University but dropped out without obtaining a degree.
Career in Media
Geller's career in media began in the 1980s when she worked at the New York Daily News as a financial analyst and later in advertising and marketing. She went on to become an associate publisher for The New York Observer from 1989 to 1994.
Anti-Muslim Activism
Geller's anti-Muslim activism gained prominence in 2006 when she republished the controversial Danish cartoons of Muhammad in her blog. She further gained attention in 2010 for leading a campaign against the proposed Park51 Islamic community center, which Geller referred to as the "Ground Zero Mosque."
Geller is the president of Stop Islamization of America (also known as the American Freedom Defense Initiative), an anti-Muslim group that she co-founded with Robert Spencer. Since 2013, she has purchased anti-Muslim advertisements on public transportation in various cities.
In 2013, the British government banned Geller from entering the UK, citing her anti-Muslim activities and stating that her presence would not be "conducive to the public good." Geller has claimed to have been the target of assassination attempts by Islamic fundamentalists.
Personal Life
Pamela Geller was married to Michael Oshry from 1990 to 2007. She received a settlement of nearly $4 million in the divorce. Michael died of a heart attack in 2008. His daughters received $5 million from his life insurance policy. Pamela and Michael had four daughters: Claudia, Jackie, Olivia, and Margo Oshry. All four are social media influencers who run the Instagram account "Girls Without Jobs" and host a Facebook Live/YouTube show called "Morning Toast."
