Norman Pritchard was an Indian athlete and actor, who won two silver medals at the 1900 Summer Olympics and appeared in 28 films as a silent movie artist. He was born on June 23, 1875, in Calcutta, India. In 1900, while vacationing in Paris, he learned about the Olympic Games being held there and decided to participate in the athletics competitions. He not only became the first athlete from Asia to compete at the Games but also the first medalist.
Athletic Achievements
Pritchard competed in five sprinting disciplines. On July 14, he participated in the 100m and 110m hurdles races. In the first event, he won the first round but finished second in the semi-final. He could only advance by winning a run-off, but he also finished second in it. In the hurdles race, he won the semi-final but failed to finish the final race. The next day, on July 15, he competed in the semi-final of the 60m race but only secured third place, preventing him from advancing further. On July 16, he competed in another hurdles distance, the 200m. After winning the preliminary semi-final, he finished second in the final, earning a silver medal. On his final day of competition, July 22, Pritchard participated in the 200m race. He first finished second in the semi-final and then in the final, becoming a double silver medalist.
Career in Football and Acting
After the Olympics, he worked in the Indian Football Association from 1900 to 1902. He then moved to the United States in 1905, where he pursued a career in acting. Pritchard appeared in 28 silent films under the stage name Norman Trevor. He worked in a variety of genres, including drama, comedy, melodrama, and adventure films. He continued acting until his death on October 31, 1929, in Los Angeles, due to a brain illness.
