N Numa Droza
Numa Droz was a Swiss politician and journalist who served as President of the Swiss Confederation in 1881 and 1887.
Early Life and Career
Born to a watchmaker, Droz initially pursued a career as an engraver at a watch factory before becoming a primary school teacher. In 1864, he began his foray into politics as the editor of the newspaper "Le National suisse," founded by André Jacques.
Political Ascendancy
In 1869, Droz was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Neuchâtel. Subsequently, he represented Neuchâtel in the Council of States from 1872 and became its president in 1875. From 1875 to 1876, he served as President of the Council of Cantons, the upper house of the Swiss Parliament.
Federal Council and Presidency
On December 18, 1875, Droz joined the Swiss Federal Council as a member, a position he held until his death in 1892. During his tenure, he held various high-ranking positions:
- Head of the Department of the Interior (1876-1878)
- Head of the Department of Trade and Agriculture (1879-1880, 1882-1886)
- President of Switzerland (1881, 1887)
- Head of the Political Department (1881, 1887)- Vice President of Switzerland (1886)
Later Years and Legacy
Droz died on December 15, 1899, at the age of 55, from meningitis. His name continues to be honored today with a street named after him in La Chaux-de-Fonds and a square in Neuchâtel.
