Early Life and Military Career
Nuno Álvares Pereira was born into Portuguese nobility in central Portugal. At the tender age of 13, he embarked on a military career in 1373. He quickly rose through the ranks, proving himself an exceptional strategist and leader.
Marriage and Battle of Aljubarrota
At 17, Pereira married Leonor de Alvim. In 1385, he led the Portuguese army to a decisive victory over the Castilians at the Battle of Aljubarrota. This triumph solidified Portugal's independence and earned Pereira the title of Constable of Portugal.
Crisis of Succession
During the Crisis of Succession of 1383-1385, Pereira played a crucial role in resolving the political turmoil. His military prowess and diplomatic skills helped secure the throne for King John I.
Monastic Life
In 1404, Pereira relinquished his vast fortune to the Carmelite monastery. Following the death of his wife, he joined the Carmelite order in 1423, living in the monastery until his passing.
Legacy and Canonization
Nuno Álvares Pereira's memory lives on as a national hero of Portugal and a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. He was beatified in 1918 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. His feast day is celebrated on November 1st.
