Sun Tzu, an enigmatic figure from ancient China, is renowned as one of history's greatest military strategists and philosophers. Estimated to have lived in the 6th or 4th century BCE, his legacy continues to inspire military leaders and thinkers to this day.
Early Life and Military Service
According to Sima Qian's "Records of the Grand Historian," Sun Tzu, whose real name was Wu, was a native of the Qi kingdom. He served as a mercenary general under Duke He Lü of the Wu kingdom.
The Harem Test
Sima Qian recounts an episode where Duke He Lü tested Sun Tzu's military acumen by ordering him to train his harem in warfare. Sun Tzu divided the women into two battalions, appointing the most skilled concubines as commanders. When he gave the command to march in various directions, the women giggled and ignored his orders. Sun Tzu promptly executed two of the commanders, explaining that a general's authority must be absolute. The remaining concubines, fearing for their lives, carried out his commands with precision.
Victories and Conquests
Impressed by Sun Tzu's ability, Duke He Lü entrusted him with the command of his army. Leading Wu's forces, Sun Tzu achieved significant victories over the powerful Chu kingdom, capturing its capital and inflicting defeats on the kingdoms of Qi and Jin. These triumphs elevated Wu to a position of prominence among the civilized states of China, and King He Lü was recognized as an official ruler.
The Art of War
At the behest of Duke He Lü, Sun Tzu penned a treatise on military strategy that became known as "The Art of War." This seminal work, translated into numerous languages, has influenced military thinking and practices for centuries.
Return and Death
After his military triumph, Sun Tzu returned to his homeland of Qi and died shortly thereafter. Centuries later, members of the Sun clan during the Three Kingdoms period claimed descent from him.
