Nurtas Zhakypov: A Paralympic Taekwondo Champion
Kazakhstan's Nurtas Zhakypov is an accomplished Paralympic taekwondo athlete, boasting two World Championship titles, and representing his country at the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.
World Championship Success
Zhakypov has demonstrated his dominance in the over 75kg weight category at the World Para Taekwondo Championships. In 2014, he emerged victorious in Moscow and repeated his triumph in London in 2017. His sole setback came at the 2015 World Championships in Samsun, where he settled for the silver medal.
Paralympic Journey
Zhakypov made his Paralympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games in the over 75kg category. After advancing to the quarterfinals, he faced defeat against Costa Rican Andres Molina. However, he bounced back in the consolation rounds, securing a victory over Moroccan Rashid Ismaili Alaoui before ultimately losing to Mexican Francisco Alejandro Pedrosa Luna and bowing out of the tournament.
At the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, Zhakypov competed in the over 80kg weight category. He advanced to the quarterfinals, where he faced a loss against American Evan Medellin. Undeterred, he rallied in the consolation rounds, defeating Croatian Ivan Mikulic before falling in the Bronze Medal match to Iranian athlete Hamed Hagshenas.
