Born to Nigerian parents in Washington, D.C., Oguchi Onyewu is an American soccer player who has made his mark as a central defender for the United States national team and Italian club A.C. Milan.
Early Life and Football Roots
Onyewu spent his childhood in Maryland, where he honed his football skills at Sherwood High School and the IMG Soccer Academy. He later played for the Clemson Tigers, showcasing his defensive prowess.
Club Career: From France to Belgium
In 2002, Onyewu signed with French club FC Metz, but limited opportunities led him to Belgium, where he joined La Louvière in 2003. Impressing in Liege, he moved to Standard Liège in 2004.
At Standard, Onyewu established himself as a key player, earning recognition as the Belgian League's Best Foreign Player in 2005. He captained the team to two championship titles in 2008 and 2009, scoring memorable goals in the Belgian Super Cup.
Move to Milan and International Debut
In 2009, Onyewu transferred to A.C. Milan, becoming the tallest field player in U.S. national team history. He made his international debut in 2004 and scored his first goal in 2005, helping the United States win the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
World Cup and Confederations Cup
Onyewu played all three matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, but the U.S. team failed to advance beyond the group stage. In 2007, he won his second CONCACAF Gold Cup, playing a pivotal role in the team's undefeated run.
