Early Years and Swiss SuccessAt the tender age of 14, Felipe Caicedo began his football journey with the youth team of Barcelona, Ecuador's top-achieving club. Two years later, he moved to Rocafuerte, a second-tier team, where his talent caught the attention of European scouts. In 2006, at the age of 17, Caicedo signed with Swiss club Basel, marking the start of his professional career.
Manchester City Venture
On January 31, 2008, Caicedo made headlines with his transfer to Manchester City for a then-record Swiss league fee of £5.2 million. Despite this promising move, he struggled to establish himself in England. In two seasons, he managed only a handful of goals and was primarily relegated to games with the reserve squad.
Iberian Adventures
In the search for playing time, Caicedo embarked on loan spells with Sporting, Malaga, and Levante in Spain. It was with Levante that he truly flourished. In 27 games, he became the league's most efficient striker, scoring 13 goals.
Leviathan with Lokomotiv
In July 2011, Lokomotiv Moscow acquired Caicedo from Levante for 7.5 million euros. Despite initial success in Russia, he eventually lost his starting position to Dame N'Doye. Seeking more game time, Caicedo departed for the United Arab Emirates in 2014.
European Return and Retirement
After stints with Al-Jazira and Espanyol, Caicedo joined Lazio in 2017. He enjoyed a successful spell there, most notably scoring a double against Sampdoria in 2018. In 2019, Caicedo signed with Genoa, where he finished his club career.
International Career
Caicedo represented Ecuador at both youth and senior levels. He made his international debut in 2005 and scored 25 goals in 68 appearances. In 2017, he announced his retirement from the national team after the resignation of head coach Gustavo Quinteros.
