Biography of Charlotte Wessels

Charlotte Wessels, born in the Dutch city of Zwolle, is a Dutch musician and the vocalist of the symphonic metal band Delain. From a young age, she had a passion for music and singing, and even learned to play the clarinet, allowing her to perform in an ensemble. At the age of 13, she started writing and performing songs for a school group she formed with a friend. Charlotte received training in jazz and classical singing, but decided to combine both styles, which can be heard in Delain's music.

Vocalist of Delain

Charlotte became the vocalist of Delain at the age of 17, after previously participating in projects such as To Elysium and Infernorama. In 2004, she met Martijn Westerholt, who was looking for members for his new project at the time. Martijn invited her to join as the vocalist. The first album of the band, "Lucidity" (2006), did not fully showcase Charlotte's abilities as a vocalist, as other vocalists, including Marco Hietala (Nightwish), Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation), and Liv Kristine (Leaves' Eyes), were also involved in the recording. However, on the second studio album, "April Rain" (2009), Charlotte had more creative control and wrote the lyrics for all the songs, allowing her to fully express herself as a vocalist.

Interests and Influences

Apart from music, Charlotte Wessels is also interested in painting and sports. Her favorite musical artists include Radiohead, Dresden Dolls, Foo Fighters, Jeff Buckley, Sia, Placebo, Depeche Mode, Pink Floyd, Eels, Kate Bush, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Deep Purple, Mike Oldfield, Joni Mitchell, Massive Attack, Portishead, The Prodigy, Anathema, In Flames, Lunascape, Starsailor, and The Smiths.
