Early Life and FamilyAlex Van Halen was born on May 8, 1953, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His father, Jan, was a Galápagos-born saxophonist, and his mother, Eugenia, hailed from Java, Indonesia. In 1962, the Van Halen family immigrated to Pasadena, California, and changed their surname to Van Halen.
Musical Roots and Education
Alex's early musical training was on the piano. While he was influenced by musicians like Mitch Mitchell and John Bonham, he began primarily playing drums in high school.
Formation of Van Halen
In 1972, Alex and his younger brother, Eddie, formed the band Mammouth. They later changed the name to Van Halen, with Eddie on guitar and vocals, Alex on drums, Michael Anthony on bass, and David Lee Roth on vocals.
