Biography of Ólafur Valgarðsson
Early Life and CareerÓlafur Valgarðsson, an Icelandic footballer, was born in Reykjavík and began his career with the local club Fylkir. His exceptional talent caught the attention of English Premier League giants Arsenal, who signed him on July 1, 2001.
Arsenal and Fylkir Loan
Valgarðsson spent two years with Arsenal's youth team before returning to Fylkir on loan in 2003. During his loan spell, he impressed as a young midfielder and was named the Icelandic Premier League's Young Player of the Year.
Arsenal Debut and Departure
On December 2, 2003, Valgarðsson made his long-awaited Arsenal debut as a substitute in a match against Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, his chances were limited, and he left the club in May 2005.
Move to Brentford
Valgarðsson signed a contract with Brentford in June 2005. Club manager Martin Allen expressed his admiration for the midfielder, stating, "I see this as a real step forward in my career, and to know that a manager of Martin Allen's calibre was keen to sign me was a big compliment."
Injury and Recovery
Valgarðsson's time at Brentford was marred by a serious knee injury suffered in a collision during a match against Chesterfield. He missed the entire 2005/06 season but returned to fitness in time for the start of the 2006/07 campaign, scoring a match-winning goal in the season opener against Blackpool.
Helsingborg and SønderjyskE
In February 2007, Valgarðsson moved to Swedish club Helsingborg, where he spent three seasons. After declining a contract extension, he joined Danish club SønderjyskE on January 1, 2010.
International Career
Valgarðsson made his international debut for Iceland in a friendly match against Mexico in 2003. He has represented his country at the youth and senior levels, captaining the Iceland U-21 team.
