Working with Robertson, Halvorsen gained invaluable experience, the significance of which is difficult to quantify. Under the guidance of Julian Robertson, Tiger Management increased its fund's assets from $8 million to $22 billion. Among Robertson's disciples, known as "tiger cubs" in the trading community, there are numerous successful modern traders. This list includes John Griffin, the founder of Blue Ridge Capital, Lee Ainslie, the founder of Maverick Capital, Steve Mandel of Lone Pine Capital, and, of course, Ole Andreas Halvorsen.

In 1999, Halvorsen founded his own hedge fund, Viking Global Investors, along with two partners. Viking Global Investors specializes in investments in the media industry and internet companies' stocks. Within a year, Halvorsen and his partners increased their initial capital by 89%. In 2000, the prestigious American magazine Forbes included Ole Andreas Halvorsen in its list of the top hedge fund managers of the year, ranking him at 21.

In 2006, the publication Trader Monthly included Halvorsen's name among the top 100 traders on Wall Street. In 2007, Alpha Magazine published its annual ranking of hedge fund managers who earned the most in 2006. According to Alpha Magazine, Ole Andreas Halvorsen earned approximately $520 million that year, slightly behind his fellow "tiger cubs" Stephen Mandel and John Griffin, who earned $710 million and $625 million, respectively.
