Tim Barakett: From Hockey Star to Investment Guru

Early Life and Hockey Career

Tim Barakett, born in 1966, graduated from Harvard University, where he excelled in hockey. As a star player (scoring 76 goals in his senior season), he caught the attention of the National Hockey League's New Jersey Devils. However, Barakett opted to pursue a career in business and declined their offer to join the team.

Career in Investment

After earning an MBA from Harvard Business School, Barakett began his investment career at Junction Advisors under Rick Frisby in the early 1990s. Barakett's interpersonal skills and ability to build trust with investors enabled him to make successful investments.

Founding of Atticus Capital

In 1995, Barakett co-founded Atticus Capital with Nathaniel Rothschild, a descendant of the renowned banking family. The fund, named after the noble lawyer Atticus Finch in Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird," started with $5.8 million in assets.

Investment Strategy

Barakett's investment strategy is founded on trust and thorough research. He prefers to invest in undervalued companies that have a strong track record of performance. Through diligent analysis, Atticus has acquired stakes in a network of copper mining companies and railroads, including a 20% stake in Deutsche Burse.

Financial Success

Today, Atticus Capital is valued at approximately $15.5 billion, and Barakett personally earned nearly $700 million in 2006. His success is attributed to his competitive nature, analytical mindset, and ability to identify undervalued investments.

Family Ties in Finance

Barakett's family is also involved in finance. His brother, Brett Barakett, runs Tremblant Capital, a smaller hedge fund based in Greenwich, Connecticut.
