Early Life and Education

Ole von Beust was born on April 13, 1955, in Hamburg, Germany. His father, Achim Helge Freiherr von Boist, was a politician, while his mother was part Jewish. Von Beust's family faced challenges during the Nazi era due to his mother's heritage.

Von Beust completed his secondary education at Walddörfer-Gymnasium and went on to study law at the University of Hamburg from 1975 to 1980. During this time, he held various positions within the CDU's youth organization.

Political Career

Rise Within the CDU

In 1971, von Beust joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). After graduating from high school, he worked as an assistant to the Hamburg CDU office. From 1977 to 1983, he served as chairman of the CDU's youth organization in Hamburg. In 1978, he became a member of the Hamburg Parliament.

First Mayor of Hamburg

On October 31, 2001, von Beust was elected as the First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. He was re-elected to the position in 2004 and 2008. As Mayor, he focused on urban development, social policy, and construction projects such as HafenCity.

President of the Bundesrat

From 2007 to 2008, von Beust served as President of the Bundesrat, the upper house of the German Parliament.

Resignation

On July 18, 2010, von Beust announced his resignation as First Mayor of Hamburg. He stepped down from his position on August 25, 2010, and was succeeded by Christoph Ahlhaus.

Personal Life

Sexual Orientation

Von Beust's sexual orientation became public knowledge in 2003. The revelation came after his former deputy mayor, Ronald Schill, threatened to expose von Beust as gay. In response, von Beust held a press conference where he denied having a sexual relationship with his close associate, Roger Kusch, but did not explicitly confirm his sexual orientation. Von Beust's father later confirmed his son's homosexuality in an interview.

In September 2010, von Beust introduced his partner, Lucas Förster, to the public. Förster is 36 years younger than von Beust.
