Biography of Valeriy Pustovoytenko

Valeriy Pustovoytenko is a Ukrainian statesman who served as the Prime Minister of Ukraine from 1997 to July 1999. He was born into a family of collective farmers and completed his education at Odessa Trade School No. 9. Pustovoytenko further studied at Odessa Polytechnic Institute and Dnipropetrovsk Engineering and Construction Institutes. From 1966 to 1968, he served in the Soviet Army.

Early Career

In 1984, Pustovoytenko became the manager of the Dniprobudmechanization Trust. He then served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Babushkin District Council in Dnipropetrovsk from 1986. In 1987, he became the Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Dnipropetrovsk City Council. In March 1990, Pustovoytenko was elected as a People's Deputy of Ukraine. From April to September 1993, he served as the Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

Prime Minister of Ukraine

Pustovoytenko assumed office as the Prime Minister on July 16, 1997. Following the inauguration of President Leonid Kuchma in November 1999, his government resigned in accordance with the Ukrainian Constitution. After his resignation, Pustovoytenko became involved in party work and became the leader of the People's Democratic Party of Ukraine in December 2000. From 2000 to 2001, he served as an advisor to the President of Ukraine and Secretary of the Political Council under the President.

Later Career and Awards

On June 9, 2001, Pustovoytenko was appointed as the Minister of Transport of Ukraine in the government of Anatoliy Kinakh. In 2002, he was elected as a People's Deputy of Ukraine. Pustovoytenko has been awarded several honors, including the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise of the Fourth and Fifth Degrees, the Honorary Badge of the President of Ukraine, the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Stanislaus, and the Merited Builder of Ukraine title. He has also received the Medal "Veteran of Labor" and the Medal "10 Years of Independence of Ukraine," along with a Certificate of Merit from the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
