Arsenal Defender

In the 2002/03 season, Oleksandr Luzhynskiy made 17 appearances in the Premier League, receiving three yellow cards. Arsenal finished as runners-up, a familiar position behind Manchester United. In his final match with Arsenal, Luzhynskiy played against Southampton in the FA Cup, earning the man of the match award and celebrating the team's cup victory.

Dynamo Kyiv Captain

Before joining Arsenal, Luzhynskiy was a key figure in Dynamo Kyiv's success under Valeriy Lobanovskyi. The team's performance in the Champions League caught the attention of European clubs, including Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. However, Luzhynskiy initially declined offers to stay and help Lobanovskyi rebuild the team.

Transfer to Arsenal

In 1999, Luzhynskiy secured a move to Arsenal, despite interest from Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and Newcastle United. He signed a three-year contract, earning £2.9 million and wearing the number 22 shirt.

Premier League Season

Luzhynskiy made 30 appearances in his first season, receiving two yellow and one red card. Arsenal finished as runners-up in the Premier League and reached the final of the UEFA Cup, losing to Galatasaray. He also played in two Champions League matches and four UEFA Cup matches, including two semi-finals against Werder Bremen.

Transfer Speculation

Despite a promising season, Luzhynskiy was placed on the transfer list. Lyon expressed interest, but the £3.2 million asking price proved to be a deterrent.

Later Arsenal Career

In his second season, Luzhynskiy struggled to adjust to the team's defensive formation. He made a significant contribution in the 2000/01 season, appearing in 38 league matches and several cup matches. Arsenal finished as runners-up in the Premier League and reached the FA Cup final.

In the 2001/02 season, Arsenal won the Premier League title and the FA Cup. Luzhynskiy briefly captained the team in the absence of Seaman and Vieira.

Departure from Arsenal

At the end of the 2002/03 season, Luzhynskiy left Arsenal after 109 appearances in four years. He had three vice-championship titles, a championship title, two FA Cup titles, a UEFA Cup final appearance, and was recognized as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Later Career

Luzhynskiy briefly considered retirement but eventually joined Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, he failed to secure a regular place in the team and left after one season. He finished his career in Lithuania.
