Oliver Heaviside: Early Life and Career
Oliver Heaviside was born in London on May 18, 1850. He worked for a telegraph company in Newcastle, but in 1874, his worsening deafness forced him to leave the job. From then on, he conducted his scientific research in his own private laboratory.
Contributions to Electromagnetism
Heaviside's major physical contributions were in the fields of electromagnetism and mathematical physics. In 1892, he began investigating the theoretical aspects of telegraphy and the transmission of electrical signals. His innovative work in this area led him to propose increasing the inductance of telephone lines to enhance long-distance communication. Additionally, he introduced the concept of impedance, which represents the total resistance of an electrical circuit containing capacitances and inductances to a sinusoidal alternating current.
Electromagnetic Theory and the Heaviside Layer
In his multi-volume work "Electromagnetic Theory" (1893-1912), Heaviside put forth the hypothesis that an ionized layer of the atmosphere, capable of reflecting radio waves, existed (known today as the ionosphere). Notably, American electrical engineer Arthur Kennelly proposed a similar hypothesis at roughly the same time.
Mathematical Contributions
Heaviside is also credited as one of the creators of operational calculus. This branch of mathematics provides powerful tools for solving complex equations, particularly in electrical engineering.
Legacy
Oliver Heaviside passed away in Torquays, Devon, on February 3, 1925. His groundbreaking work laid the foundation for many modern advancements in electrical engineering and telecommunications. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest scientists of the Victorian era and beyond.
