Biography of Olivier Blanchard

Olivier Jean Blanchard was born on December 27, 1948, in Amiens, France. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Paris Dauphine University, and later received his doctorate in economics from MIT in 1977.

Blanchard began his teaching career at Harvard University from 1977 to 1983, before returning to the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also served as a consultant for the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Known as one of the most cited economists in the world, according to the IDEAS database of the RePEc Internet project, Blanchard was recognized for his contributions to the field of macroeconomics. He published numerous articles and textbooks on macroeconomics for students and graduate students.

In 1987, Blanchard and Nobuhiro Kiyotaki demonstrated the importance of monopolistic competition for the multiplier effect – a shift in aggregate demand. Their work influenced the formation of many Keynesian macroeconomic models that incorporate monopolistic competition.

Blanchard has been a former member and current member of the Econometric Society, a former vice president of the American Economic Association, and a current member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Since September 1, 2008, Blanchard has served as the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In this role, he provides economic advice and leads research efforts at the IMF.
