Biography of Omar Suleiman
Early Life and Military CareerOmar Suleiman was born on July 2, 1936 (or possibly 1935) in the Egyptian city of Ken. He pursued a career in the military and was enrolled in the Egyptian Military Academy in 1954. In the 1960s, Suleiman also studied at the M.V. Frunze Military Academy in Moscow, Russia. He also studied political science at Cairo University and Ain Shams University.
Director of Egyptian Intelligence
In 1992, Suleiman became the head of the General Operations Department of the Egyptian Armed Forces. In 1993, he was appointed as the director of the Egyptian General Intelligence Services (EGIS), also known as "Mukhabarat." Suleiman played an active role in internal politics and was known for his efforts in combating Islamist groups in the 1990s.
Diplomatic Efforts and Role in Middle East Conflicts
Suleiman gained trust and recognition internationally for his role in negotiations and diplomatic processes related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He was involved in peace talks between Israel and Palestine, as well as negotiations with other Middle Eastern countries. Suleiman was praised for his efforts in reaching temporary ceasefires between Israelis and Palestinians in 2001, 2003, and 2005.

In January 2011, amidst large-scale protests against President Hosni Mubarak's regime, Suleiman was appointed as the Vice President of Egypt. However, he was associated with the Mubarak regime and was seen by many as a continuation of the existing government. Eventually, Suleiman was replaced as the head of intelligence by Murad Mowafi.
Later Years and Legacy
After his tenure as Vice President, Suleiman remained out of the public eye. In 2012, he announced his candidacy for the presidential elections but was disqualified by the Presidential Elections Committee. Suleiman passed away on July 19, 2012, at the age of 76.
Throughout his career, Suleiman was known for his role in intelligence and diplomacy, particularly in the Middle East. He played a significant role in regional conflicts and peace negotiations, although his legacy remains controversial due to his association with the Mubarak regime.
