Early Life and Education
Omer Yankelevich was born in Tel Aviv in 1974. Her parents were Adie, a nurse born in Latvia, and Jacob (Yasha) Yankelevich, an actor from Lithuania. At the age of 5, her parents became religious. Yankelevich grew up attending ultra-orthodox institutions. She received a senior certified teacher's certificate from a Haredi seminary in Gateshead, England. She later pursued a teaching degree from Scherz Seminary in Tel Aviv and worked as a teacher in Jerusalem.
Legal Career
Yankelevich holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Law from Ono Academic College and Bar-Ilan University, respectively. She qualified as an attorney in intellectual property law in 2007 and served on the Israeli Bar Association's National Committee for Intellectual Property. She worked as a legal assistant to a judge at the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court and District Court. She later became the chief of staff to Avi Cohen, the Director-General of the Ministry of Social Equality.
Political Career
Yankelevich was elected to the Knesset in 2019 for Blue and White. She subsequently served in the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd Knesset. She served on the Education, Culture, and Sports Committee before being appointed Minister of Diaspora Affairs in Israel's 35th government, becoming the first ultra-orthodox female minister.
Religious Views
Yankelevich has expressed support for gender segregation in ultra-orthodox society. She believes that separation allows ultra-orthodox women to advance academically and professionally without facing discrimination.
