A Renowned German Philologist

Georg Heinrich Ludwig Lücke was a German philologist who made significant contributions to classical and biblical studies.

Early Works

Lücke's early research focused on ancient Greek language. In 1787, he published "De origine ac vi verborum deponentium ac mediorum," a groundbreaking work on the origin and meaning of Greek verbs. He later contributed valuable notes to an edition of Thucydides published in 1793.

Biblical Exegesis

Lücke's interests eventually turned to biblical scholarship. In 1818, he published "Canticum cauticorum illustratum ex hierographia orientalium," an exegesis of the Song of Solomon based on the hieroglyphics of the Middle East.

New Testament Translation

Lücke's most notable achievement was his translation of the New Testament. Published in several volumes between 1818 and 1845, it was accompanied by extensive commentary that demonstrated his mastery of biblical languages and history.

Legacy

Lücke's work as a philologist and biblical scholar left an enduring legacy. His translation and commentary on the New Testament continue to be consulted by scholars today. His contributions to classical and biblical studies played a significant role in shaping the understanding of ancient languages and texts for generations to come.
