Early Life and Education
Óscar Berger was born into a wealthy plantation family. He attended a private Jesuit university, where he completed his education.
Mayor of Guatemala City
In 1991, Berger was elected Mayor of Guatemala City, a position he held until 1999. During his tenure, he made significant progress in urban development and infrastructure improvements.
Presidency
In 2003, Berger was elected President of Guatemala as the candidate for the Grand National Alliance party. In the first round of elections, he received 34% of the vote, while his left-wing opponent, Álvaro Colom, received 26%, and former President Efraín Ríos Montt received 19%. In the second round, Berger emerged victorious with 54% of the vote, defeating Colom.
